INDIA
" Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, forgotten by everybody, I think that is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat...The hunger for love is much more difficult to remove than the hunger for bread."
~ Mother Teresa
Most often when I've heard people comment about India its of brilliant colors, extreme poverty, and uncomprehending chaos. I can testify to having experienced these things as well as witnessing India's rich history and culture. But when I think of India I remember most the hungry souls of the people. Its the impression you get as you minister in a culture saturated by idols and the great needs that accumulate when one is away from the freedom of Jesus.
India is a place of desperate need - from poverty and hunger, to their belief system in over 350 million gods. Though missionaries have been working in India for many long years, it's still needing the truth of the gospel and the love and healing it provides. These people need you and I to continue to reach out to them and pray for them, so that they're not abandoned to beliefs that will continually hurt them.
What are the people like?
More than brilliant colors of clothing and tapestries I found a brilliant people. From cities to villages, the people that I encountered are the ones who left me departing India forever changed.
The hospitality they showed us was quite monumental even for what you'd expect in an American society of wealth. Where the average woman works for fifty cents a day, and the average man for a dollar a day, the amount of money they would spend to lavishly welcome us into their homes with warm tea, coffee, and cookies could have easily been a week's worth of money. Once when I commented on the beauty of a ladies ring she took it off and gave it to me without hesitation but wanting me to accept her gift. When we needed translation, transportation, or explanations they were more than willing to help in any way they could. They gave out of the little material possessions they had but they gave from the overflowing wealth of all their hearts.
How are they similar to us?
Though America has material wealth... do we not still long for purpose and peace, love and contentment? Different from us, most of India lacks material wealth, however they still search for these inner longings the same as we. What has been your answer? If you're reading this I hope you've found the real and lasting answer in Jesus! Jesus is also the answer for everyone else in the world, including India.
Who has the answer?
Our God's very character is to comfort, to save, to love, to feed the hungry, and to help the poor.
Let's be imitator's of our Father God!
If you have an opportunity to pour into the lives of the needy people of India will please you do it?
